In order to foster the students' ability to translate design concepts into real products, FJCU’s Department of Textiles and Clothing held a Smart Sportswear Design Competition through industry-academia collaboration. The opportunity serves to cultivate the students’ ability to draw, make patterns for, and produce smart clothing, and to use a combination of knitted fabrics, high-performance sportswear sewing machines, electronics, circuits, and smart modules to complete their garments. In order to increase accuracy and efficiency and to shorten the time for trial and error, the use of 3D fitting software was introduced, which reduced production time by 50%. In addition, students learned about the importance of environmental protection in the apparel design process by choosing materials that were produced in a sustainable and environmentally-friendly way by three different companies, giving the companies incentive to research and develop more sustainable and environmentally-friendly products. Furthermore, in order to help add value to New Taipei City's local agricultural products, FJCU’s Human Ecology College has created a new agricultural value chain for local agricultural products through plant breeding, storage, and transportation, in turn driving the transformation and upgrading of the agricultural industry.
