College of Liberal Arts :
Chinese Filipino are proud of their heritage and culture, and many of them send their children to Chinese school. However, it is difficult for local communities to find and hire qualified teachers of the Chinese language since there are so few of them. Upon the request of Father Ko, who serves the local community, FJCU’s College of Liberal Arts sent a team of volunteers called “International Culture Volunteers” to aid the local Chinese Filipino. One, it will help further Chinese cultural traditions overseas; two, it will help them understand modern Chinese society. The volunteer team sought to accommodate the classes offered at the local elementary and middle schools at which they served, had discussions with the teachers there, and helped to teach the Chinese language, while also providing students with an all-Chinese learning environment. Students were encouraged to converse with our team in Chinese and to put into practice what they have learned in their daily lives. The team also organized classes about Chinese culture, such as traditional folk art and crafts, calligraphy, and traditional Chinese painting, giving them the opportunity to learn more about Taiwan and Chinese culture.
