FJCU’s overseas service learning team has been going strong for many years. The India Service Learning Team established in 2006 mainly serves the various organizations under the Missionaries of Charity, including the Kalighat Home for the Dying founded by Mother Teresa. It also collaborated with India’s Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee, a group working for the rights of female sex workers, assisting them in matters concerning their children’s education. The Ulaanbaatar Service Learning Team was established in 2007, and works with local Catholic churches as well as Caritas Mongolia to aid the development of local communities and to teach women skills in working with textiles. The Lashio Service Learning Team working in Myanmar collaborates with a local school (聖光學校, meaning Holy Light School) to help locals of Chinese descent to continue with their Chinese language education, as well as assisting in life education for young children. FJCU is an active participant in regional service learning networks, and a member of the Taiwan Service-Learning Association as well as the Service-Learning Asia Network founded by Lingnan University in Hong Kong. In 2015, FJCU hosted the 5th Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning. Furthermore, the school sends faculty members to conferences on service learning every year, where they publish related academic research, securing FJCU a key position with regard to service learning in the Asia Pacific region.
