The Philippines
Right now, the biggest issue in education in the Philippines is the country’s inability to provide all school-age children with sufficient school buildings and facilities. Many families have no choice but to have their children drop out of school because they cannot scrape together the equivalent of USD$10 in school fees every year, resulting in an elementary school enrollment rate that is less than 50%. In working with Philippine Philanthropic Fund, a NGO that has long been invested in local education and health care, FJCU has sent its students to impoverished areas to experience life in local communities and to teach English to local children for two weeks at a time.
