FJCU upholds the Catholic value of humanity and cares for the physical as well as mental health of its teachers and students. FJCU has Ministry Offices established at various colleges (including School of Continuing Education) that operate under the Office of Vice-President for Mission Affairs. Together, they provide spiritual care for all teachers and students on campus, fulfill the institution’s mission of “bringing love and service to campus life and people,” and support spiritual growth in people while creating a harmonic environment for cooperation.
As a Catholic university, FJCU has unique mission units available to support the physical and mental health of all teachers and students; these services are accessible by colleges and the Affiliated Hospital through the following channels:

  1. Ministry Office - provides religious counseling
  2. Teachers Counseling System
  3. Office of Student Affairs
  4. Office of Military Instruction
  5. Student Counseling Center
  6. Hospital Pastoral Care Department

Channels 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are mainly intended for students; together, they create a service network that provides support, care, and counseling to those in need.
Teachers and staff are able to acquire mental health support through channels 1, 5, and 6.

The Student Counseling Center has a professional team of counseling psychologists, clinical psychologists, and psychiatrists available to provide one-to-one counseling, group counseling, and psychological assessments for new students. The Center offers approximately 300 counseling sessions per week, and each counseling session lasts 50-60 minutes. These professionals help students through one of the most critical stages in their lives.

FJCU’s Student Counseling Center has been established to promote and maintain students’ physical and mental health through professional counseling skills. The Center hires professional guidance counselors as defined in the Student Guidance and Counseling Act; they provide guidance and counseling at one of three levels, namely “Developmental guidance,” “Intervention counseling,” and “Remedial counseling,” to help maintain students’ physical and mental conditions and needs. “Development guidance” aims primarily to improve mental health, and a broad range of resources and channels have been made available for teachers and students for this purpose. “Intervention counseling” is intended for students who have troubles fitting, encounter recurring problems, or experience major trauma; these students are given counsel on a case-by-case basis, either individually or in small groups, using programs that are specially designed for their needs, and could be evaluated for a referral. “Remedial counseling” targets students who are mentally ill, have serious difficulties fitting in, exhibit undesirable behaviors, or commit major misconduct; for these students, assistance is provided in conjunction with professional services such as psychotherapy, social work, family counseling, occupational therapy, legal service, and psychiatric treatment.

Aside from the campus, the Affiliated Hospital also has a Pastoral Care Department and counselors available to provide individual counseling for those who endure stress from work and organize group motivational activities. Counselors also make regular ward rounds and actively help employees handle patients’ or family members’ emotions, such as fear of illness, grief, and frustration, which strengthens employees’ resilience.

In addition to the complimentary service channels listed above, Fu Jen University Clinic, too, provides mental health outpatient service to FJCU teachers, staff, and students in need, so that they may learn more about themselves and live life to the best potential!
