FJCU promotes health and welfare in collaboration with local partners, national partners, and international partners

Local partners:
FJCU formed an alliance with Liya Health Co., Ltd., National Taiwan University Hospital, Shuang Ho Hospital, Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, MacKay Memorial Hospital, and Cathay General Hospital through a contract to participate in the breast cancer screening program of Health Promotion Administration. Through its Department of Respiratory Therapy and Affiliated Hospital, FJCU cooperated with Taishan Farmers’ Association, Hsing Fu Community Development Association, and Fu Chien Community Development Association to promote simple pulmonary function tests in the community. FJCU also formed an “FJCU Community Healthcare Group” with a total of 8 clinics, including Chiao Er Children’s Clinic, Yoyo Pediatric Clinic, and Hsiao Min Clinic in Xinzhuang District, New Taipei City Wugu District Public Health Center in Wugu District, and Huai An Pediatric Clinic, Yung Hsu Clinic, Yeong-An Clinic, and Tai An Clinic in Taishan District to support National Health Insurance Administration’s “Family Physician Care Program.” Overall, FJCU currently supports 3 long-term programs in collaboration with 8 hospitals/clinics, 3 community associations, and 1 private institution.

  1. Fu Jen University Clinic has formed an alliance with Liya Health Co., Ltd. to support Health Promotion Administration’s breast cancer screening program. Using a mobile mammography vehicle, the clinic traveled to various communities in Taipei City and New Taipei City, where it provided mammogram screening for local women so that cases of breast cancer could be identified and referred for treatment as early as possible. FJCU has also signed contracts to refer patients to National Taiwan University Hospital, Shuang Ho Hospital, Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, MacKay Memorial Hospital, and Cathay General Hospital for a complete service network in addition to its own Affiliated Hospital. Through private alliances and networks, FJCU supports the government’s cancer screening policy and contributes to the feminine health of the nation. The network served a cumulative number of 21,673 people in 2019 and 25,363 people by the end of September 2020.

  2. The Department of Respiratory Therapy and Fu Jen Catholic University Hospital jointly organized an event on World Asthma Day (May 3, 2019) to provide the general public with proper health information on asthma, including early prevention, daily care, and smoking cessation. To promote “easy breathing,” FJCU cooperated with Taishan Farmers’ Association and Hsing Fu and Fu Chien Community Development Associations and performed simple pulmonary function tests at local communities.

  3. The Affiliated Hospital joined the “Family Physician Care Program” in 2018 and formed “FJCU Community Healthcare Group” with a total of 8 clinics, including Chiao Er Children’s Clinic, Yoyo Pediatric Clinic, and Hsiao Min Clinic in Xinzhuang District, New Taipei City Wugu District Public Health Center in Wugu District, and Huai An Pediatric Clinic, Yung Hsu Clinic, and Yeong-An Clinic in Taishan District (Reference toLINK1 : Introduction to participating clinics and physicians of FJCU Community Healthcare Group ). It has also formed collaborative relationships with several community healthcare systems in Xinzhuang and Banqiao. For the short term, FJCU plans to implement new practices such as individual care, parallel/vertical referral, and a 24-hour health consultation hotline so that everyone may have a family physician to look after them; in the long term, FJCU will emphasize enforcing duties of family physicians as a way to improve the quality of medical services.

National partners:

  1. An “FJCU Health Alliance” comprising 17 major local hospitals including: Cardinal Tien Hospital, Shin Kong Memorial Wu Ho-Su Hospital, Cathay General Hospital, Taipei City Hospital, Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, En Chu Kong Hospital, Saint Paul's Hospital, Taoyuan Armed Forces General Hospital, Tungs' Taichung MetroHarbor Hospital, Show Chwan Health Care System, Chi Mei Medical Center, E-Da Hospital, Camillians Saint Mary’s Hospital Luodong, and Fu Jen Catholic University Hospital was formed in 2019. The alliance not only provides opportunities such as PGY training, resident physician, and chief physician for graduating students of FJCU School of Medicine, many of the medical institutions also engage teachers of the School of Medicine in various collaborative research projects that aim to promote public health and welfare. FJCU actively looks for opportunities to exchange knowledge with foreign schools of medicine, and signs academic collaboration agreements with foreign counterparts to help expand the global vision of its teachers and students. These collaborations also give students a short (long) term opportunity to learn abroad and work towards the same goals.

  2. Cooperative education: FJCU School of Medicine and the Affiliated Hospital have signed cooperative education contracts with several domestic hospitals (including: Shin Kong, Cathay, Cardinal Tien, Far Eastern, and Chi Mei) and universities (such as: National Tsing Hua University) to engage in a wide range of activities from internships and the support of full-time and part-time teachers to join research projects. Through training of professional healthcare workers and exchanging fundamental and clinical knowledge, FJCU contributes to promoting public health and welfare.

  3. Diabetics support network: The Health Promotion Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare, has engaged the FJCU Department of Nursing to oversee the Establishment and Operation of Nationwide Diabetes Support Group. By offering counsel to support groups in Northern, Central, Southern, and Eastern Taiwan, FJCU has created a community support network that not only connects and shares resources but also collaborates in various ways to help subjects access available resources given their differences in locality or culture, and thereby promote the self-management of health.

International partners
FJCU formed collaborative relationships with healthcare institutions of reputable universities in Australia, Japan, and Finland. It arranged cross-border visits for teachers and students as a way of contributing to the health and welfare of the world.
FJCU and Changhua Christian Hospital engaged Edna Adan Hospital of Somaliland (located in northeast Africa) in a series of academic exchanges and cooperation on medical experience and knowledge, targeting women and children as the primary subjects.
  1. The Department of Nursing has signed agreements with Australian Catholic University, Western Sydney University, Saga University (Japan), and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences (Helsinki, Finland) to exchange teachers and students on a yearly basis. Through these exchanges, participants may develop a personal understanding of how patients are cared for under different cultures, and compare similarities and differences in patients’ needs across countries to improve the world’s healthcare capacity.
